The Mean Green football team announced yesterday that redshirt freshman quarterback Dajon Williams will be the starter for Saturday’s game against Nicholls State University.

“We got to re-energize and rejuvenate and get this offense on track,” head coach Dan McCarney said. “We got to get going or this college football season will leave us behind.”

McCarney said the reason for the change was the offense’s inability to move the ball in last Thursday’s 42-21 loss to Louisiana Tech University. The offense was shut out in the first half of the game and had eight punts on its first eight possessions. Late in the fourth quarter, Williams entered the game and led the offense on two touchdown drives. That made an impression on McCarney.

“Dajon did some good things in the fourth quarter the other day,” McCarney said. “Finally, he has figured it out. He is practicing, doing some good things and hopefully he is matured.”

Sophomore quarterback Josh Greer started the first three games of the season and completed 48 percent of his passes for 171 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. On Saturday, Williams completed five of seven passes for 98 yards.

McCarney said Williams was not ready to start the season because he had missed many of the voluntary workouts over the summer, including two major scrimmages the team held.

“Bottom line is that he is our guy this week and we are going to rally behind him,” McCarney said.

Junior wide receiver Carlos Harris said the team is ready to get the offense going with Williams and believes he can bring a different dynamic to the team.

“He is a very mobile quarterback who likes to throw the ball, makes smart decisions and I think he will flourish,” Harris said. “He likes to throw the ball deep ,and I really like that.”

Senior offensive lineman Cyril Lemon said Williams has the intangibles to be a starting quarterback.

“He is quiet, but I think he is going to be good when it comes to leadership,” Lemon said. “He has shown over the practices and spring ball that he can be the guy.”

Kickoff for the Mean Green’s game against Nicholls State is  2:30 p.m. at Apogee Stadium.
