In most action movies all you need is a couple of star studded actors, some dazzling explosions and maybe a few laughs here and there. The new buddy cop movie “2 Guns” hit these beats & many more, but by the end of it you may be scratching your head and saying this movie seems oddly familiar. Well, that is because “2 Guns” feels like it is the recycled product of dozens of action movies.

Director Baltasar Kormakur (“Contraband” 2012)  shows that he knows his way around a fun action movie–with briskly paced scenes, absolutely hilarious moments and well choreographed action–but  Kormakur fumbles many aspects, such asits hyper-complicated plot and an array of unnecessary tonal shifts.

All you need to know about the plot of “2 Guns” is Denzel Washington( “Flight” 2012) and Mark Wahlberg (“Ted” 2012)  each play undercover law enforcement officers who find themselves on the run after a botched attempt to infiltrate a Mexican drug cartel.

Washington and Wahlberg both might be closet comic geniuses. They use their untapped sensesof comedic timing to heighten the mediocre material. The humor is exercised so often that it completely overshadows and distracts from the action. What could have made the movie better is if Kormakur would have dropped back a bit on the silliness and trudged deeper into the inherent grittiness of the movie.

There is a scene where Walhberg is forced to evade a few armed assailants in a desert canyon. Defenseless, he has to rely on a few cunning maneuvers to save his life.

This scene works so well because it is clever and simple. Luckily there are a few more enamoring moments like this, although they are primarily in the first half of the movie.

“2 Guns” isn’t a total mess, there are too many intersecting sub-plots that become too convoluted and unfulfilling.  An eclectic cast of show up including Bill Paxton, James Marsden and Edward James Olmos, which helps add a little spice to the movie.

Walhberg is able to put the entire movie into perspective with just one line after he and Washington battle each other in a car chase turned brutal fist fight. He says with a smirk on his face “ Ahh man you got to admit that was kind of fun.”

“2 Guns” opens Nationwide Friday.
