Review: “Girl Most Likely”

Rating 2/5
The lovely Kristen Wiig rose to fame as a cast member on Saturday Night Live, a year before she retired from the classic sketch comedy program she jumped on to the Hollywood A-List playing a foul-mouthed maid of honor in “Bridesmaids” (2011) and from then on has been in a string of hits, most recently the worldwide hit “Despicable Me 2” (2013). So, naturally her latest effort “Girl Most Likely” has a lot of promise.
“Girl Most Likely” tells the story of Imogene, a former up and coming playwright that has steadily been going on a downward spiral since her boyfriend broke up with her, finally culminating with a fake suicide attempt that forces her to move back to her hometown with her mother and brother.
Wiig does a fine job bringing her comedic style and sentiment to another misguided woman trying to find her way. Much to the dismay of potential viewers her performance isn’t enough to overcome a confused movie with odd tonal shifts that couldn’t decide whether it wanted to focus on a heartfelt mother daughter relationship or a typical romantic comedy.
The movie also sports a quirky supporting cast that features the show stopping Annette Bening, (“American Beauty” 1999) a charming Darren Criss (“Glee”) and the lovable goofball Matt Dillion ( “Crash” 2004). In this case all the characters are fairly engrossing with formidable traits rather it be Criss’ awesome Back Street Boys impersonation or Dillion’s role as a paranoid CIA agent, but the movie gets too side tracked with this and completely forgets about the narrow plot at hand.
A valiant attempt by Wiig and the fascinating cast of characters to rescue the film from the filmmakers who turned what could have been a funny movie about a woman trying to find her way and some how turned the movie into glorified Sit-Com. Wiig, the filmmakers and audiences members should just pretend this one never happened, we can all use a mulligan now and then.
“Girl Most Likely” comes out today.
