Rating: 4/5

“Wilfred” had a really strong season with its third outing. It even featured some of the best episodes of the series, with sidesplitting stories such as this season’s fourth episode, “Sincerity,” where Ryan (Wood) takes Wilfred (Gann) to a dog training class in the hopes of winning over a girl.

Since our review of the season opener back in June (see our review here), where we found Ryan still puzzled by the discovery of a painting he did of Wilfred years before the two even met, a lot has changed.

If you have kept up with the show you would be aware that Ryan’s dad, portrayed by James Remar (“Dexter”), has not been in his son’s life the first two seasons. But now, while it’s apparent that there are still some trust issues between them, they are back in contact, and are even talking about working together again at the law firm. To add a little more to the mix, Ryan grew closer to his sister (Brown) and even got a roommate (Kristen Schaal) to help pay for his bills.

One thing that we have come to know about the show is that it never misses a step in its twisted absurdity. Some episodes are strictly made to make you laugh, while others are there to move the story along and take you to strange places. Airing tonight, the finale, titled “Regrets,” is one that does both. It sets up the episode where it could go to a really interesting and fun place, and then out of nowhere it dives way off the deep end and leaves us with more lingering questions than ever before.

While I wish that the finale had gone in a different direction, it’s a great episode that’ll make for an amusing discussion. So if you’re thinking of taking a break from studying for tomorrow’s quizzes tonight, turn your thinking-cap to the television screen and put it on FX. The end of “Wilfred” is sure to tickle your fancy and make your head spin!

“Wilfred” airs tonight at 9 p.m. on FX. You can catch the first two seasons on Netflix and Season 3 on and iTunes.
