North Texas men’s golf freshman Thomas Rosenmueller continued an impressive start to his inaugural season for the Mean Green, finishing the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational atop the leaderboard after shooting a 12-under par 204 throughout the tournament. The freshman fueled the team to an overall championship as well, as the Mean Green tied with Michigan State University to grab a tournament win for the sixth straight year.
Rosenmueller is the first North Texas freshman to win an individual title since Anthony Broussard in 2005, and he also shot the second lowest round in school history in round two of the tournament with a nine-under par 63.
Rosenmueller became just the eighth player in the nation to shoot a 63 this season.
“It means a lot to me,” Rosenmueller said. “To break school records is always something special for a player. To shoot the lowest round of my career in that tournament and on that course was very special for me.”
In addition to the strong play of Rosenmueller, junior captain Cory Churchman finished sixth to capture his first top ten finish of the season and fourth of his career. Churchman shot a two-under par 70 in the final round of the tournament to help secure the tournament championship for the Mean Green.
As a team, North Texas shot their two best rounds of the season with a 12-under par 276 in the second round and a six-under par 282 in the third round to close out the tournament. Sophomore Michael Cotton finished in 17th place for the Mean Green, while freshman Ian Snyman and junior Nick Rodriguez finished in a tie for 41st.
The first place finish in the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational closes out the fall segment of the 2015-2016 season on a high note for the Mean Green going into the winter break.
The Mean Green will be back in action in February at the Oak Hills Intercollegiate in San Antonio.
