Another weekend of inconsistency plagued the Mean Green volleyball team as it won just one of three games at the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup held in Houston on Friday and Saturday.

UNT (7-8) started the tournament by taking Louisiana State University (10-1) the distance before falling in the final set. The team swept the University of Houston (7-6) the next day but ended the tournament with a loss to regional rival Baylor University (6-8) in straight sets.

One more non-conference game remains on the Mean Green’s schedule, a home match-up against Stephen F. Austin University (10-4) before Conference USA play starts next weekend.

With only a small amount of time left before the conference season start, the team must get better in key areas for the upcoming competition.

“There are a lot of different things we can continue to fix, like our defense,” head coach Andrew Palileo said. “We need to be more consistent in crunch times and we can always get better in our passing.”

The players continue to search for answers on why the results have not gone in UNT’s favor.

“There were moments when we were unstoppable and we had moments where we looked at each other and didn’t know what was going on,” junior outside hitter Hanna Forst said.

Part of the problem is the pressure on the team to win. When the players on the team make a mistake, Forst said their energy drops and the play is affected.

The team continues to implement a new system ever since Palileo arrived at UNT in April. The system was a question going into the tournament to see how the team had adjusted so far.

“Overall, we pretty much have it down, we know what he expects and he knows what we are capable of,” sophomore outside hitter Carnae Dillard said. “We are just trying to find out the kinks in ourselves, not necessarily the system.”

Dillard led the team with 46 kills over the tournament, including a 21 kill performance in the LSU matchup.

The Mean Green’s final non-conference game starts at 6 p.m. against Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday.
