The North Texas football team lost in the final seconds after having an 18-point lead going into the half. With the loss, North Texas now has no chance of playing in the Conference USA championship this year.

The Mean Green were heavily looked at as favorites to win this game and it looked that way all throughout the first half. On Old Dominion’s first possession of the game, senior defensive back Kemon Hall came up with his 4th interception of the season to put the Mean Green on Old Dominion’s side of the field to start the drive.

On the ensuing possession, junior quarterback Mason Fine hit junior receiver Rico Bussey Jr. on a 23-yard touchdown pass to become the Mean Green’s all-time leader in career passing yards, breaking Mitch Mayer’s record in 1994.

Fine would finish the day 26/44 for 240 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

Sophomore running back DeAndre Torrey ran in a touchdown from 37 yards on the next possession. After North Texas went three and out the following possession, Torrey would find the end zone again, this time from seven yards out.

Torrey would finish the day with a career-best 149 rushing yards on 25 carries to go along with two touchdowns.

North Texas would then take a 28-0 lead – it’s largest of the game – after Bussey Jr. reeled in a 26-yard touchdown pass from Fine.

Old Dominion would answer back with a touchdown and field goal before the half, making the score 28-10.

The Mean Green’s offensive performance would decrease in the second half. North Texas’ only points in the second half came off a 35-yard field goal by graduate student kicker Cole Hedlund that was set up by a punt block by Bussey Jr. on the previous possession.

Old Dominion outscored the Mean Green in the 3rd quarter 14-3, narrowing the deficit 31-24 heading into the fourth.

With 11:49 to go in the fourth, Old Dominion converted a 3rd and 16 with a 53-yard pass, leading to a field goal and lessening the lead to 31-27.

The Mean Green had two possessions to put the game away, but turned the ball over on downs and went three and out the very next possession.

This left Old Dominion with 3:22 left in the game, as they converted on two fourth down attempts during the ensuing drive that brought them to the one-yard line. On 3rd and goal, Old Dominion running back La La Davis scored from a yard out with 15 seconds left to give the Monarch’s a 34-31 lead – their first of the night.

With 15 seconds remaining, North Texas managed to get up to it’s 47 yard line for a last-second Hail Mary attempt, but Fine would be sacked for a 13-yard loss, ending the game and completing the comeback for Old Dominion.

This was the third time this season North Texas saw a double-digit lead slip away in the second half, something head coach Seth Littrell wants to fix this season.

“There’s enough blame to go around, coaches and players,” Littrell said. “We’ve got to figure how to finish these games off.”

Next Up – North Texas will have a short week preparing for its next game against Florida Atlantic Thursday night in Apogee Stadium.
