The Mean Green women’s basketball team will say goodbye to three seniors Wednesday when it hosts the University of Texas at El Paso for senior night. But, unlike most senior nights, this game won’t be the last game of the season.

Senior night was originally supposed to be on Sunday against the University of Texas at El Paso at the Super Pit. But, that game was moved to Texas Women’s University as the Super Pit was booked for a cheerleading completion. Because the university owns the Pit, the athletic department and team had to find an alternative.

Head coach Mike Petersen said the team will be ready to play on Sunday.

“I don’t think we’ll have any trouble getting motivated, whether we play at the Super Pit or TWU or if you put two baskets up in the middle of I-35,” Petersen said.

Junior forward Achiel Tac said while the game is technically a home game, it won’t feel the same.

“I would say it’s an away game, but a home game at the same time,” Tac said. “It’s in Denton, but it’s not on our court. So it’s new territory and a new environment, so I would say more of an away game.

Senior forward Briesha Wynn said the game will feel different, but she still expects the fans to come out.

“It’s more of an away game, the atmosphere is most definitely different,” Wynn said. “But it’s close so we’ll have a lot more fans than an away game so it’s kind of in between.”

As far as the senior night game being a game earlier, Petersen said they will still treat it the same on Thursday.

“Senior night is an honor to recognize our seniors and we will do that,” Petersen said. “But I’ve always been a guy that plays the players that earned playing time.”

Tac said the seniors have left their mark on this season, especially since they have been leaders throughout a tough year.

“We’ve had a rough season but they had the motivation to keep going,” Tac said. “They believed our luck could change throughout the season so they brought leadership, motivation and the will to keep going.”

The senior night game against UTEP will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, and the game against UTSA at TWU will also begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday. This game is free for all who attend.
