Brief: SGA summer update

The atmosphere was light and relaxed as the Student Government Association held its first session of the year Thursday evening.
After hearing two speakers, representatives introduced two referendums to the student constitution that could turn SGA from a senate system into a bi-cameral system by introducing a house of representatives.
While the senate is drawn from UNT’s colleges and seats are based on how many students attend that college, the house of representatives would be made up of 40 members drawn from student organizations. Student Activities already breaks student organizations down into categories, such as religious/spiritual or club sport. Each category would have four seats in the house of representatives.
With a two-thirds vote, the house of representatives would have the power to override a presidential veto on legislation or pass legislation that failed in the senate, as well as confirm non-elected executives that had been denied by the senate or override a decision to fire non-elected executives. They would also be able to sponsor legislation in senate.
SGA will need the approval of the student body to form this house of representatives. They will hold a vote Sept. 22.
