In a highly physical bout, the North Texas soccer team defeated conference rival the University of Alabama at Birmingham 1-0 in a crucial Conference USA match up.

Coming into the game, both teams were riding a nine-game unbeaten streak and were fighting for position near the top the C-USA standings.

The Mean Green (10-2-2, 5-0-1) defense suffocated the Blazers’ (9-2-3, 3-1-1) offensive attacks all night long. UAB, which came into the game ranked No. 19th in the country with an average of 2.38 goals per game, were held to just seven shots on goal.

“Defensively we were outstanding,” head coach John Hedlund said. “They [UAB] have two offensive mids that lead their team in goals and assists and we wanted to make sure we had them marked throughout.”

The game was extremely physical throughout, with both teams combining for 21 penalties and three yellow cards.

Offensively the Mean Green put pressure on the Blazers back line, finishing with 20 shots on goal. Coming into the game, the Mean Green were averaging 2.62 goals per game, but needed just an early second-half goal from freshman defender Brooke Lampe to win.

It was Lampe’s third goal of the season.

“I can not score unless the whole team puts in the effort,” Lampe said. “Them getting the ball up the field and then passing it to me and me finishing is a whole team work thing.”

Hedlund switched his team’s formation for the game, and that gave Lampe a chance to play in a different spot than she was used to. Ultimately, that’s what put her in a position to score.

“Growing up I learned to play whatever position you get and do your best at it,” Lampe said. “John [Hedlund] was saying before the game with your time on the field you just have to work your minutes and use them to your ability. I did not know how long I was going to be in but when I am in I am going to work my butt off.”

Junior forward Aaliyah Nolan lead the Mean Green in shots with five, and she was putting pressure on the Blazers back line of defense for the majority of the night.

Nolan assisted Lampe on the only goal of the game.

“It was kind of a surprise to me and was unexpected,” Nolan said, “I thought it was going to be harder for me to run through everybody. It was tough, but easy at the same time.”

The win over the Blazers keep the Mean Green on pace with C-USA leader Rice, and keeps them on track to secure their fourth straight C-USA title.

Next up: The Mean Green hit the road to face the Charlotte 49ers at 6 p.m. Oct. 19.
