The Mean Green soccer team traveled to Norfolk, Virginia and defeated Old Dominion University (4-9, 2-2) by a score of 2-0 on Sunday. The win was the fourth straight for North Texas (12-2-1, 4-0-1), keeping its undefeated conference record intact.

“We played another solid team today, which says a lot about our conference,” head coach John Hedlund said. “There are simply no easy games.”

After playing over 90 minutes of scoreless soccer on Friday, the Mean Green did not wait long to take the lead. Senior midfielder Karla Pineda put in a penalty kick just two minutes into the game for her sixth goal of the season.

“We definitely didn’t want to wait until the last minute again [to score]. That’s just extra minutes that we don’t need to be playing,” senior goalkeeper Jackie Kerestine said. “It’s always nice to get that quick start.”

The remainder of the first half was back and forth. Old Dominion put four of its six shots on goal in the first half but could not get any past Kerestine. On the other side, North Texas got just three shots off and failed to put one on goal.

North Texas came out aggressive in the second half, getting denied on a header from junior forward Marchelle Davis and having two shots saved in the 65th and 67th minutes. But the Mean Green continued to attack, and Davis put a shot into the top right corner of the net from 25 yards out to give North Texas a 2-0 lead in the 75th minute. The score was the fourth for Davis this season.

Davis said the chemistry of the front line has been steadily improving with each game this season.

“We’re working together more up top, making sure we’re getting our passes off and finishing our chances,” Davis said.

The physicality of Hedlund’s squad kept the score steady for the remainder of the game, earning a shutout victory for the third straight game. The shutout was Kerestine’s tenth of the season, good for third all-time in North Texas history.

“As a defensive unit, we’re a force to be reckoned with,” Kerestine said. “Whether I make a save or it deflects off of me, somebody’s there to cover.”

North Texas finished the game with a disadvantage in shots (12-9) and corner kicks (3-2), coming out victorious despite being outshot for the second straight game.

The Mean Green will head back to Denton for two home games next weekend, starting with a Friday night matchup against Middle Tennessee State University. The game will begin at 7 p.m.
