In a rare Friday afternoon road game, the Mean Green soccer team defeated the University of Southern Mississippi by a score of 2-0. The victory propels North Texas (15-2-1, 7-0-1) to a seven game win streak and keeps its undefeated record in conference play intact.

“It’s never easy to win on the road,” head coach John Hedlund said. “Credit Southern Miss. They played hard throughout the match and have a very bright future with all of their young talent.”

The Mean Green came out looking for a quick lead but were slowed by two offsides penalties in the first eight minutes. However, senior forward Amber Haggerty scored on the team’s first shot of the game in the ninth minute to take an early 1-0 lead. The goal was Haggerty’s fourth of the season, coming from seven yards out from yet another assist from senior midfielder Karla Pineda.

The offense continued to dominate early on, getting off five more shots before the 30 minute mark. Defensively, North Texas allowed only three shots from the Golden Eagles (4-11-3, 2-7) heading into halftime.

“Our mindset has changed a little,” Holden said. “We know we have to get on top of teams early, and that really helps us win games.”

Hedlund’s squad carried its momentum into the second half, getting another goal to go up 2-0 from junior forward Rachel Holden. The score came after a rocket from Pineda bounced back into the field of play, allowing Holden to head it in for her tenth goal of the year.

With the header, Holden became the first player on the North Texas roster to reach double digit goals this season.

“She’s been really important, especially on her follow-ups. She’s always there to finish the ball,” Haggerty said. “All of us together really have great chemistry.”

From there, the score would hold the same despite a strong push from the Golden Eagles to get on the board. Southern Miss put up four of its seven shots and three of four corners in the final 25 minutes. Senior goalkeeper Jackie Kerestine needed just three saves to notch her 12th shutout of the season.

With the win, North Texas remains undefeated in conference play and has an opportunity to clinch the Conference-USA regular season crown with one more victory. Standing in its way is Rice University, the same squad that ended the Mean Green’s run in the Conference-USA tournament last year.

“Everybody’s going to come out, especially being senior night to get some revenge,” Haggerty said. “I definitely know everybody’s hungry for a win on Sunday.”

The Mean Green will head back to Denton for a Sunday night for its last home game of the season against Rice, currently the No. 2 team in C-USA. The game will begin at 7 p.m. following senior night festivities.
