In the final matchup of the Las Vegas Invitational, the Mean Green soccer team defeated the tournament host University of Nevada, Las Vegas 1-0.

Although both teams began the season with wins on Friday night, the Mean Green (2-0) scored the only goal of the game with a header from junior forward Anna Flobeck in the 24th minute, assisted by sophomore defender Tori Phillips.

The goal came less than three minutes after Flobeck was subbed into the game. It was her first of the season and seventh of her career. After the match, Flobeck said head coach John Hedlund’s frequent early substitutions helped bench players come out of the gate with high intensity.

Despite being outshot by UNLV (1-1) 14-5 from the field and 6-2 from the corner, North Texas never relinquished the lead. Head coach John Hedlund said the heat was a big factor in surviving until the end.

The Mean Green had a hectic final ten minutes in which junior forward Rachel Holden and senior midfielder Karla Pineda received yellow cards. A crucial offside penalty against UNLV clinched the victory for North Texas in the 90th minute.

The Mean Green also benefited from the play of senior goalkeeper Jackie Kerestine, who posted four saves and recorded her first shutout of the season. It was her 32nd career shutout, putting herself even further ahead as the North Texas career shutout leader.

She said the amount of shots the Rebels put up kept her focus sharp throughout the game.

Hedlund went with a balanced attack again on Sunday, as 19 different players saw at least 10 minutes of playing time. However, the Mean Green committed 14 fouls in the game, a number which may have been attributed to the scorching 105 degree heat.

Hedlund said the heat took a major toll on the team and credited the win to a survival strategy for the majority of the second half.

The Mean Green will head back to Denton to begin classes before heading to San Antonio on Friday for a matchup against the University of the Incarnate Word. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
