The Mean Green soccer team concluded its regular season on a high note, defeating Western Kentucky University 4-0 to win the regular season Conference USA championship outright. The Mean Green finished the season on a four game winning streak against conference opponents. The team will also be the No. 1 seed in the C-USA tournament next week.

“It’s huge, there is no easy team in this conference, so to do what we did, it’s huge,” head coach John Hedlund said.

The team got off to another fast start as sophomore forward Marchelle Davis scored five minutes into the match, which was her fourth goal of the season.

The Mean Green tallied another goal in the 81stminute off of a set piece header from sophomore forward Anna Flobeck. The late game scoring continued as junior forward Amber Haggerty tallied two goals in as many minutes with one in the 84th minute and the other in the 85th.

The Mean Green defense didn’t allow a goal and junior goal keeper Jackie Kerestine notched her 12th shutout of the season.

“We have a relatively young back line, I was able to mold the defense to what I wanted. They were all ears, open to all be on the same page this season,” Kerestine said, “I really credit them, I couldn’t have done this by myself.

The C-USA tournament begins next week as the Mean Green will take on Marshall University (7-6-5) on Wednesday.

“I fully expect to win, we haven’t played Marshall before, but I fully expect to win,” Kerestine said.
