Softball clinches series with UTSA

The Mean Green softball team got a 5-2 win in game three of its home series with the University of Texas – San Antonio on Sunday.
Through the first three innings both teams remained scoreless. Freshman pitcher Monique Garcia threw four strikeouts and didn’t allow a hit until the fourth inning. UTSA scored the first runs of the game with a homerun to left center, and Garcia was replaced with sophomore pitcher Stacey Underwood.
North Texas bounced back in the fifth inning when senior outfielder Kat Strunk singled through the left side and tied the game up 2-2. Sophomore catcher Shelbie Smith followed that up with with another RBI single, followed by one more up the middle from sophomore infielder Kelli Schkade.
North Texas finished the game with one more RBI single from sophomore utility player Mallory Land in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Underwood pitched through to the sixth inning with three hits and no runs topping off an impressive weekend of pitching where she allowed only two runs in eight total innings.
North Texas will play No. 5 Oklahoma Universtiy at home on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
