Softball drops two mid-week games

The Mean Green softball team took on the University of Oklahoma Sooners and the University of Texas-Arlington Mavericks this week in a home-road split.
Oklahoma
On Tuesday at Lovelace Stadium, Oklahoma (40-3, 8-1) showed why it’s the No. 1 team in the nation.
Because of the NCAA run rule, the game ended in the sixth inning with the score 12-1, giving the Sooners its 40th win of the season.
“I guess you could call this game a wakeup call,” sophomore third baseman Jordan Terry said. “We just can’t come out scared. We needed to come out thinking of this game as an opportunity to beat the No. 1 team in the nation and we just didn’t do that.”
The Mean Green (22-22, 9-9) is now 0-22 all-time against OU.
The single UNT run came in the second inning via a Terry solo home run. The ball bounced off the top of the center field wall and out of play.
For the last two weeks, the Mean Green has struggled with offensive production.
The Sooner’s rank is no excuse for UNT’s lack of production at the plate, head coach T.J. Hubbard and the Mean Green players said.
“For OU expectations, they weren’t hitting the ball like they usually do,” junior shortstop Brooke Foster said. “They had just two home runs and most of the balls weren’t solidly hit. On top of it, we made mistakes on the field and we didn’t adjust to the pitcher. I really don’t think there was any excuse for us tonight.”
UT-Arlington
The second game of the season between the Mean Green and the Mavericks (9-24, 3-12) started slow at Allan Saxe Field in Arlington.
In the fourth inning things got rolling as both teams broke into the run column. At the end of the inning, UTA led 2-1.
The score would stay that way through to the final out.
Though handed the loss, junior pitcher Ashley Kirk threw a no hitter into the fourth inning, finished the game with nine strikeouts and only gave up two hits the rest of the outing.
“I felt like we had a bounce back game from a pitching and defensive perspective compared to the OU match,” Hubbard said. “Ashley threw a hell of a game for us. We didn’t play bad at all. We were just more unlucky than anything.”
Over the weekend the Mean Green finishes its schedule at home against Sun Belt Conference opponent University of Louisiana-Monroe (19-27, 3-14).
