After getting swept by the University of Texas at San Antonio, the Mean Green continued their road-trip to San Antonio, this time with a 10-2 run-rule win over the University of Incarnate Word.

The win was the team’s second run-rule win in five games, improving the Mean Green to (14-9) while the Cardinals dropped to (8-14).

“I thought our offense carried today,” Kee said. “They did a much better job of taking quality cuts. I think it was important for us to head home with a win. We’ll get back to work.”

An explosive eight-run fourth inning and a solid outing by junior righty Stacey Underwood led the Mean Green back to its winning ways. North Texas walloped three long balls on the day, with junior Kelli Schkade, and freshmen Rhylie Makawe and Harley Perella getting in on the party.

Makawe has now hit a home-run in two of the past four games.

“We saw a lot of different pitchers out there,” Schkade said. “We made the adjustments that needed to be made for the pitchers, and we were just seeing the ball and hitting it. We strung a lot of hits together, and we had very timely hitting.”

North Texas did the majority of their damage against junior righty Kristin Hebert. Hebert only lasted 0.2 innings, giving up five runs on three hits. The Cards rolled out three different pitchers on the day.

“Our goal is to always try and knock a pitcher out of the game,” Kee said. “We want to get to their next arm and their next arm. I thought Incarnate did a nice job of throwing different speeds at us, but I though they responded very well.”

North Texas started the scoring in the top of the second when Makawe hit a deep fly-ball to left that found its way out of the ballpark for two runs – her third of the season to make the score 2-0 in favor of North Texas.

It was not all North Texas, however, as Incarnate Word answered in the bottom of the fourth. The Cards loaded the bases and got two-runs after a bloop single to right by freshman Darriane Hale to tie the game at 2-2. Hale was also the starting pitcher for the Cards, lasting 3.0 innings while giving up three hits and two earned runs.

Underwood limited the damage to just two runs as a part of her 3.1 innings of work, giving up seven hits and only one walk. Freshman Lauren Craine entered the ballgame to work 1.2 innings of work, and she held the Cards scoreless on only 15 effective pitches.

“I’m really proud of Lauren,” Underwood said. “She could have given up at any time this, like lost hope with how much she’s been in the bullpen, but she didn’t. Every time she comes in, she’s effective. It’s just her hard work.”

North Texas blew the game wide open in the fourth inning. The scoring started when a run scored on a wild pitch, and then freshman Bailey Thompson added another on a RBI single to right, her fourth RBI of the season making it 4-2.

Schkade blew it open with a three run home-run, her ninth of the season, to make the score 7-2. Two batters later, Perella hit a two-run no doubter to center, her fourth making it 9-2. Makawe finished out the scoring as the Mean Green batted around with an RBI double making the score 10-2.

“We couldn’t dwell on the series [against UTSA] because it didn’t go as we wanted to,” Schkade said. “I think the bounce back, having run-ruled this team and having that timely hitting really sets us up good for Marshall and gets a little confidence back in our hitting.”

North Texas will return home on Saturday, March 19 to start a three game home stand against Marshall University starting at 1 p.m.
