Entering as winners of 10 of their last 12, North Texas was swept by the University of Texas at El Paso in two games on Saturday afternoon on the road. The first by the score of 11-5 and the second 11-8.

“They out-pitched us, they out-hit us, they had better defense, they had a running game, all credit goes to them,” head coach Tracey Kee said. “They played hard, they wanted it more than we did, it looked like.”

UTEP 11, North Texas 8

North Texas (22-19, 8-6) and UTEP (16-26, 6-11) went back and forth in the first game, but UTEP prevailed on a strong sixth inning where they scored five runs to shift the game’s momentum and score from 6-6 to 11-6. The Mean Green as well had themselves a strong sixth inning scoring four runs to tie the game, but they entered the seventh trailing.

In the final inning North Texas tried to make a late game comeback as, but two runs scored off of a junior outfielder Sally Gastelo RBI was not enough and the game was ended on the third out.

“Today, UTEP completely outplayed us in all aspects of the game,” Kee said.

Freshman pitcher Hope Trautwein started game on the mound and uncharacteristically gave up nine runs on six hits in 3.1 innings pitched. On the offensive side, junior first baseman Sam Rea and Gastelo led the game with hits for the Mean Green with two each.

UTEP 11 North Texas 5

In game two on the day, North Texas was once again playing catch up in an attempt to keep stride with UTEP’s pace early but ended up falling in the end.

After tying the game at 3-3 in the top of the third inning, the Miners dominated the rest of the game, outscoring North Texas 8-2 over the final four innings en route to the win.

Giving up 12 hits, it was not the kind of result that the Mean Green were looking for as they attempted to improve on the first game.

“We have to play almost a perfect game and we’ve got to find a way to clean up our defense,” Kee said. “All the credit goes to UTEP, I thought they played an incredible game.”

The Mean Green committed six errors in their two losses and five came in the winnable game one.

The loss drops them from their top spot in Conference USA which they held the past week.

“We understand the importance of every conference game, but we’ve got to take care of our own game,” Kee said. “We know the most important goal right now is getting out of here without getting swept, we’ve got to be able to handle this pressure down the stretch.”

Next up: The series wraps up Sunday as the Mean Green look to avoid the sweep in El Paso, Texas at 1 p.m.
