After splitting games on Saturday, Mar. 11, to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte North Texas lost to the 49ers 4-0 on Sunday March 11, 2018.

The Mean Green were at home in Denton, this time where there were excessive amounts of balls, foul balls, and almost hit pitches due to the 25 mph winds present.

“As a pitcher it’s always nice when the wind is at your back,” freshman pitcher Maria Priest said. “It can be nerve wracking when the ball goes up because you don’t really know where it’s going to go.”

The Mean Green were completely shutout bringing in zero runs for the game, but Priest relieved freshman pitcher Hope Trautwein in the top of the fourth inning. Following Priest’s entrance into the game only one run was scored as she finished the game for North Texas.

“It was nice to get out here and have a good outing,” Priest said. “As a pitching staff, when the offense is struggling it’s our job to hold it down and slow down the other team’s offense.”

Haley Wiseman pitched the game for the 49ers and is an experienced senior pitcher. On Sunday, Wiseman had her way with the Mean Green, completely shutting out the offense. Before the seventh inning, the Mean Green only had three hits.

“She’s one of the best pitchers in the conference,” head coach Tracey Kee said. “Today she understood the importance of this third game and I felt like she did a great job of attacking our hitters and we just couldn’t make the adjustments.”

Despite struggling the whole game, in the bottom of the seventh there were signs that a miracle could take place for North Texas. A single from junior outfielder Sally Gastelo loaded the bases with two outs. However, the following at-bat resulted in a fly out in right-center field that was just short of getting over the fence and tying the game for the Mean Green.

“The elements held about three home runs in the ballpark,” Kee said regarding the wind. “Including that last hit as well.”

The Mean Green fell in this opening conference series, losing two of the three games on the weekend.

“We’re just trying to get positive takeaways from these games this weekend,” Kee said. “Hopefully we all take these positive takeaways and turn it around next weekend.”

Next up: The Mean Green take on University of Texas at San Antonio on Saturday and Sunday on the road.
