With its backs against the wall, North Texas softball was unable to produce results in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

The Mean Green (20-22, 3-11) fell in its double header against the University of Southern Mississippi and now sit in a tough position to try and make the conference tournament it is hosting.

“I think this team can compete,” head coach Tracey Kee said. “I think we’re just not doing a good job of taking ownership of our mistakes.”

Left-handed junior pitcher Jessica Elder got the nod for the Mean Green in the circle, and she did her best to hold Southern Miss (22-23, 9-8) close, but she was yanked after giving up eight hits after just 2.0 innings.

Junior Stacey Underwood came in from the bullpen and also only lasted 2.0 innings but fared much better, only allowing one hit. North Texas emptied its bullpen after it brought in freshman Lauren Craine, who mirrored Underwood, allowing just one hit in two innings.

Southern Miss did all its damage against Elder, notching four runs.

“I felt our pitching staff turned a corner in the [UT-Arlington game],” Kee said. “We just couldn’t generate anything offensively today. I was incredibly pleased with Lauren Craine.”

Southern Miss did all of its damage in the bottom of the third inning with a four-run, six-hit inning. Two singles to right, and an RBI double to left center by sophomore Samantha Robles put the Golden Eagles a four-run advantage that was not relinquished.

North Texas onlh register four hits in the loss, two of which came from freshman outfielder Makenzi Dawson.

Dawson continued her good day at the plate by going 2-for-2 in game two with a walk, rounding out a 3-for-5 day.

“My goal today was swing at good pitches,” Dawson said. “That helped, obviously.”

However, it was not enough, as the Mean Green were shut out out yet again.

Stacey Underwood and Lauren Craine split the pitching duties in game two. Underwood went a solid 5.1 innings with just three runs on six hits while Craine polished it off with 0.2 innings of scoreless and hitless work.

“It’s extremely frustrating,” Underwood said. “We obviously needed these wins. We don’t have any run support now, so it’s really frustrating for everybody.”

The Golden Eagles’ runs came in the final two innings, as it added one in the fifth and two in the sixth. An RBI single through the left side gave Southern Miss the lead, and a two-run homer added two in the sixth.

Southern Miss did not relinquish the 3-0 lead, as North Texas dropped game two. The Mean Green are now in severe danger of missing postseason play.

“Right now, we’re just trying to win,” Kee said. “Every game is a must win. Our student-athletes must show up.”
