After months of preparation for the spring, North Texas softball started its 2016 season strong, splitting its opening two games with No. 13 Arizona University and University of Nebraska at Omaha on Friday at the Hillenbrand Invitational in Arizona.

No. 13 Arizona 9, North Texas 1

Despite facing a strong opponent in No. 13 Arizona, junior shortstop Kelli Schkade knocked the second pitch of the ballgame over the left field fence for a 1-0 lead. Schkade rounded out her performance with a double to right in the sixth.

Meanwhile, Arizona had the answers with power of their own. After adding a run in the bottom of the first, the Wildcats got four in the second thanks in part to a three-run shot by junior third baseman Katiyana Mauga. Arizona added two more home-runs in the third and fourth.

Junior transfer Jessica Elder made her first start for the Mean Green, but only lasted 2.0 innings after allowing seven earned runs on seven hits.

Freshman Lauren Craine was brought in for relief, and the newbie finished the ballgame strong. Although she was given the loss, Craine went 3.1 innings and only allowed two earned runs on four hits. Nine of North Texas’ 11 newcomers made their debuts on the night.

North Texas 11, Nebraska-Omaha 3

North Texas finished the night strong by run-ruling Nebraska-Omaha in five innings. Junior Stacey Underwood was dominant on the mound, fanning eight and allowing just five hits and two walks in five innings.

The Mean Green lit up Nebraska-Omaha’s pitchers for 13 hits, including a seven-run third inning for the Mean Green. Schkade lit up the skies with the long-ball again, picking up two in the ball-game for three total between the two games.

Schkade finished the night 4-for-7 with three home runs and five RBIs. North Texas would bat around the lineup in the third on their way to the run-rule win. Senior catcher Bryana Wade added a solo shot in the inning, the 12th of her career.

North Texas return to action on Saturday with another double-header in the Hillenbrand Invitational with games against University of California – Santa Barbara at noon and Southern Utah University at 2 p.m.
