The Mean Green softball team extended its losing streak to five games after getting swept by the University of Houston in a home doubleheader, 15-2 and 4-1, on Wednesday.

Game one:

The Mean Green (7-14) was demolished 15-2 in five innings in game one of the double header against the Houston (14-14).

Houston had a 1-0 lead after the first inning, but dominated after that. The Cougars had a six-run second inning and an eight-run third inning to make it a 15-1 lead. The Mean Green added on a run in the fifth inning to make it 15-2.

“We did not play the way we should have played,” senior outfielder Kat Strunk said. “We haven’t come out with a defense like that all year and I think pitching wise it was also a big struggle.”

Senior pitcher Madison Thompson pitched all five innings and allowed allow 15 runs on 16 hits. She threw 127 pitches.

Game two

North Texas lost again in game two, this time 4-1.

Freshman infielder Sarah Barker had a RBI-single to give the Mean Green a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but that was the last time the Mean Green scored.

The Cougars responded by getting on the board with a one-run score at the top of the third inning. Houston scored three more runs in the fourth inning to make it 4-1.

Senior first baseman Dani Hoff was 3-3 at the plate, while the rest of the team only combined to go 4-24. Sophomore pitcher Stacy Underwood threw 5 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on six hits.

“I think we played better in the second game,” Underwood said. “But I still feel like there are things we need to improve on. I think a matter of just putting it all together now is what is important.”

Head coach Tracey Kee said the team has a lot to improve on going into a weekend series with the University of Southern Mississippi.

“I think the biggest help is that we are getting people back,” Kee said. “We came into this game with a lot of injuries and to be able to get players like Shelbi Smith back behind the plate it just fired us up.”

The team will play a three game home series with USM this weekend starting with a doubleheader on Saturday. Game one is set for 1 p.m. while game two is set for 3 p.m.
