The Mean Green softball team was swept in a doubleheader with Marshall University on Saturday. This was originally supposed to be a three-game series, but it had to be shortened to two because of rain and Easter.

Game one:

The Mean Green (14-19) dropped game one of the doubleheader to Marshall (24-10) 1-0.

The game actually started on Friday, and the teams played five innings before officials postponed the rest of the game until Saturday.

Just before the game was postponed on Friday, Marshall scored its lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning, which turned out to be all it needed to down North Texas. Freshman pitcher Monique Garcia threw 6.0 innings and allowed three hits and the one run, but the Mean Green offense struggled, leaving seven men on base.

Marshall pitcher Jordan Dixon pitched a complete game and struck out eight Mean Green batters.

Game two:

More runs were scored in game two, but North Texas still lost, this time 16-8.

North Texas took an early 3-0 lead in the second inning, couldn’t keep pace with Marshall’s offensive output starting in the third inning. Garcia gave up eight runs through the third and fourth innings to give the Thundering Herd an 8-3 lead. North Texas got a grand slam from senior outfielder Kat Strunk that cut the deficit to 8-7.

Marshall continued its surge, scoring five more runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth to finish the Mean Green.

Dixon pitched a complete game for Marshall through six innings and allowed nine hits. Strunk led the Mean Green offensively for the game with three hits and 5 RBI.

The Mean Green will try to snap its seven game losing streak with a road game against Texas A&M University on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
