After dropping the first two games to the University of Southern Mississippi, North Texas could not salvage a win in the finale, falling 3-2.

The Golden Eagles (23-23, 10-8) got the eventual game-winning run home in the sixth with a delayed steal. After senior catcher Bryana Wade’s throw was mishandled at second, the runner from third came home to score, giving Southern Miss a 3-2 lead and win.

North Texas (20-23, 3-12) are now sitting in last place in Conference USA.

“At this point, we’re just having a difficult time winning ballgames,” said head coach Tracey Kee. “I don’t know what it is. We haven’t been doing a good job of creating our own breaks, and we haven’t put together an entire ballgame.”

Junior pitcher Stacey Underwood got the nod in the circle to start for the Mean Green, going 3.2 innings and allowing just two runs on five hits.

The offense improved from Saturday in the finale, as the top of the order scored both runs. Freshman infielder Makenzi Dawson batted first in the lineup, something that has normally been up to junior Kelli Schkade. It was the first time Schkade had not hit leadoff all season.

“I’ve hit leadoff almost my whole life,” Dawson said. “I’m comfortable with the role a leadoff has, it’s just been a while.”

Kee wanted to see if she could get some things rolling by mixing up the lineup. In the third, it worked, as Dawson was knocked in by Schkade with a double. Schkade was then knocked in by junior Danielle Gregory to tie the game at two.

Southern Miss struck for two in the first off an error and a sac-fly to right. Freshman Lauren Craine was the call to the bullpen by Kee. Craine worked 2.1 innings, allowing just one run on two hits. The only run she allowed was from the delayed steal that put Southern Miss ahead.

“Ever since the Oklahoma game I’ve worn a facemask,” Craine said. “My parents have been bugging me all year to wear it, and it seems like I’ve got more confidence out there when I wear it. I’m finally starting to get a good spin on the ball. Hopefully I can keep that up.”

Texas native Samantha Robles went the full 7.0 innings for Southern Miss, as the junior only allowed two runs on five hits.

The Mean Green now face an uphill battle to find its way into the C-USA tournament.

“We’ve been in this state of desperation for quite some time now,” Kee said.
