West Texas A&M and the University of Texas at Arlington will be heading over to Lovelace Field this Saturday to take on the Mean Green softball team.

Starting at 9:30 a.m., UNT will take on UTA and at 2:00 p.m. will go up against WTAMU. Head coach T.J. Hubbard said the team’s goal for this weekend is base running and for the offense to work on communication.

“This is probably the hardest thing,” Hubbard said. “It’s like taking nine new people who don’t know each other, throwing them in a room and telling them to build something.”

Even with the new goals for this weekend, Hubbard and sophomore first baseman Danielle Hoff agree that the team’s job of easing the freshmen into the college game isn’t over yet.

“For the team we need to just bridge the gap and make sure the freshmen feel comfortable with the players and the coaches,” Hoff said. “We are still going to have to work hard to get them ready to play, adjusting to the speed of the game and just how physically and mentally tiring the games can be.”

In preparation for this weekend, practice this week has focused on live pitching and communication.

“We are going to continue to focus on offense and specific players in terms of positions and defense,” Hubbard said. “Now it’s just the communication factor of getting used to who you need to listen to and who you need to give orders to.”

In the 2010-2011 season, UNT faced and defeated UTA 1-0 in April and 3-2 in May. Junior pitcher Lauren Poole said that everyone on the team could improve over the weekend.

“We need to just come out ready to win, get focused and improve on our communication,” Poole said.

Hoff wants to specifically improve on her fielding duties.

“I really want to work on my leadership skills,” Hoff said. “I want to be able to lead the infield when I am playing first base and make sure that there is never a time when someone of the field doesn’t know what we need to do or how many outs there are.”

UTA had an overall record of 15-26 last season while WTAMU had an overall record of 35-18 in the 2011-2012 season. UNT finished last season with 24-25 record, with 17 of those wins coming at home.

For Hubbard this weekend is about the team and not the score.

“I think by the end of this weekend, everyone will have significant playing time, enough to feel, ‘OK, this is what I need to work on, and this is how fast the game is going in my position,’” he said.
