Spider-Man Day is this Saturday, and More Fun Comics and Games is bringing Denton into the celebration with a special edition cover for “Amazing Spider-Man #1” featuring the Denton courthouse.

The variant cover shows everyone’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man catapulting above the courthouse. More Fun Comics and Games is the same store that arranged for the Denton edition of a “Doctor Who” comic back in April for Doctor Who Day.

“It looks absolutely beautiful,” More Fun Comics and Games patron Courtney Castner said.

Spider-Man Day will feature local artists drawing comics, cosplayers and a professional Spider-Man cosplayer.

The cover came to fruition after negotiations with Marvel earlier this year. The comic giant, in the midst of revamping their comic universe, has been creating dozens of variant covers, but most are themed around pop culture and cosplay.

For the people questioning what Spidey is swinging off of, it’s the Wells Fargo building. A drone was used to get the unique angle of the courthouse. Marvel artist Leinil Francis Yu drew the scene with Spidey.

In order for the cover to be created, More Fun Comics and Games had to commit to selling several thousand issues, a lot for a single comic book shop. But the gamble paid off, and the store sold more than a thousand copies on Wednesday alone when the issue hit shelves at noon.

“We sold out of the Doctor Who [comic] in four days. If you had asked me if we were going to do that with the Spider-Man book I would have said no chance,” More Fun Comics and Games manager Samuel Bruce said. “After yesterday and how busy we’ve been today, there is a chance that we could sell out a lot faster than we thought.”

The issue is $15 and can be bought with a display case for an extra $10. The store sold so many that the owner had to reach out to their distributors to pick up more of the cases.

“The response was instant and ravenous,” Bruce said.

With Spider-Man and Doctor Who in the books, Bruce said they haven’t started planning what they want to do next, but comic lovers are already thinking about what they’d like to see.

“Another one that could be used for the cover is Black Widow,” Castner said. “She doesn’t get nearly enough love.”

The variant covers have helped to revitalize comic sales, and all generations of readers are coming into the store to pick up their own copy of Denton history in the making.

”We’ve been getting people in the store who would not normally be in a comic book store,” Bruce said. “We’re putting two things together that would not necessarily be together, and people really love it.”
