Today, the Student Alumni Association and NT40 will host a school spirit event called I Heart UNT at the Union Courtyard from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is part of the university’s first- ever Student Engagement and Philanthropy Day created by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

CASE is an organization that provides resources for colleges to enhance their alumni relations, marketing and communication. Affiliated Student Advancement Programs is a division of CASE that focuses on students getting more involved at their schools.

“We wanted to have one day to acknowledge the impact students have on their campuses,” CASE ASAP program manager Robyn Neeley said.

More than 114 student organizations are participating in the philanthropy day, including universities in Mexico, South Africa, Singapore and the United Kingdom. Many organizations have planned specific events to show school spirit and recognize important donors.

“Schools are doing activities that are inexpensive but have a great impact,” Neeley said.

Development and family studies sophomore Kathleen Spriggs helped fellow members of SAA and NT40 coordinate the event.

“We already do Tuition Stop Day and Thank a Donor,” Spriggs said, “We thought about doing something that could incorporate students giving back to the university.”

During I Heart Denton, UNT students and faculty will have the opportunity to share why they love the university and what they do to give back.

“We’re trying to get more people to be able to participate in the event without having to be on campus,” Spriggs said. “Social media is a good way to get everybody involved.”

Those who cannot attend the event can interact online through Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or Vine by using the #iheartunt hashtag, and participants can enter for a chance to win a free shirt. SAA will receive $1 from each shirt purchased to go toward its scholarship fund.

Student services coordinator and staff advisor for SAA Michelle Bradley said she believes that the event is a great way for students to get involved in what goes on at UNT and be recognized for what they are already doing.

“It’s not just for students, it’s for the entire UNT community, whether you’re faculty, staff, an alumni or a supporter,” she said. “We want to get students to start thinking about how to give back to their university outside of tuition and fees.”

SAA has been on the UNT campus since last fall as a division of NT40. The organizations will host several events later this semester including Tuition Stop Day, which, a day recognizing when classes would stop if UNT was paid for only run on tuition and without donations from alumni, on March 25. From April 8-12, an event where students can donate money that will go towards scholarships for other students called Students Giving to Students will also be held.
