Some residents of north Denton lost power for about three hours Sunday when a utility box failed at the northeast corner of Stella and Bonnie Brae streets.

“I woke up because my phone kept making the noise when you charge it because it was plugged in and the power was fluctuating,” said Ian Wylie, a resident of University Courtyard.

Electricity in the area began failing around 10 a.m., leaving many residents north of campus without air conditioning or Internet. Without electricity, some students were having trouble completing their schoolwork.

“No Wi-Fi, no phones, everything’s out,” said Rhoda Tackie, a student living at University Courtyard. “I actually have an online homework due.”

There was a large group of Denton Municipal Utilities employees examining the malfunctioning utility box. Employee Joseph Candelaria attributed all the power outages north of campus to the single box.

Homes weren’t the only buildings affected. Tim Pruden was at St. David’s Episcopal Church on Ector Street when power began failing Sunday morning.

“The power was flickering on and off”, Pruden said.

Along with the lack of Internet access, residents without power also had to worry about the 90-degree air moving into their homes.

“I didn’t really feel any [heat] this morning but I was kind of worried that if it stayed out the rest of the day, it would start getting hot,” Wylie said.

By 1p.m., Denton Municipal workers were able to restore power to most residents before the heat became a larger issue and students could begin returning to their homework, hopefully before deadlines.

“I was supposed to upload some stuff earlier today, and I couldn’t,” said Lorenzo Espinoza, a student dealing with the power outage.
