For many UNT students, Willis Library is the default study spot due to its wide array of texts, desks, computers and printers as well as the 24/7 availability , but some students find the constant traffic and general atmosphere to be counter-productive to their studying.

Luckily, there are many conveniently-located shops around campus for those who want a different studying experience.

Big Mike’s Coffee

Fry Street staple Big Mike’s Coffee is one of the closest coffee shops to the campus. It was also popular because it was open 24 hours a day, but due to changes in management and rent increases, the shop had to limit its hours to 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. every night.

“I go for the environment,” business sophomore Kelsen Christian said. “It’s homey and inviting. It has the Dentonian atmosphere.”

Christian contrasted its environment to that of Willis Library, which he found to have a much less welcoming atmosphere due to its fluorescent lighting.

For those who like study during later hours of the night, there are numerous other coffee shops around Denton that are open until midnight.

The Whitehouse Espresso Bar & Beer Garden

When customers walk into The Whitehouse on 424 Bryan St., it feels more like a home than a coffee shop, primarily because it was built in an actual home. With multiple selections of both beer and coffee, students can sit back on any of the shop’s couches or tables to get some late night studying done. The Whitehouse is open until midnight Monday through Friday.

“It’s a pretty chill atmosphere,” math senior Heather Olney said. “There’s not a lot of people here and it’s pretty quiet. It’s also closer than the library from where my classes are.”

Jupiter House Coffee

“Denton’s original coffee house,” as advertised on its windows and signs, is located at the heart of downtown Denton on the Square and has a warm atmosphere based with dimmed lighting, brick walls, and pictures lined across the room. There is a sign near the register that reads, “Be kind to hipsters (They’re doing the best they can.)” It’s a store that knows its customer base.

“I like it because you can get a cheap cup of coffee,” graduate student Brett Stein said. “It’s a good place to hunker down and sit for a few hours and there’s plenty of outlets.”

Jupiter House is open from 6 a.m. to midnight seven days a week.

West Oak Coffee Bar

Also located on the Denton Square, West Oak Coffee Bar provides a full menu of freshly-made pies and sandwiches as well as its own bar.

“We serve very high-end coffee and beer and wine,” West Oak chef and assistant manager Phillip Bleecker said. “We focus on quality ingredients and knowing what’s in our food.”

West Oak Coffee Bar is open until 11 p.m. Monday through Friday and until midnight on Friday and Saturday.

“I feel like it’s a pretty good place to socialize, but quiet enough to study,” photography junior Bailey Dale said.
