Under the trees in front of Willis Library, the Muslim Student Association drew henna tattoos on students 11 a.m. to 3 p.m today. Students were able to get a henna tattoo for as little as $1 up to $8.

“Some cover the full hand,” biology senior Salwa Mahamedaman said. “The more intricate and detailed would cost $8.”

The more involved the design, the longer the henna tattoo takes to draw. Someone who is more familiar with henna tattoos is also faster. The henna can take two to three hours to completely dry.

Mahamedaman said students should expect up to 30 minutes on a complex design.

Psychology sophomore Alejandra Diaz de Leon got a small flower design done, which didn’t take long.

“I like how the henna tattoos are temporary,” Diaz de Leon said. “My mother doesn’t want me to get a permanent.”

The Muslim Student Association uses the money from the henna tattoos to pay for the organization’s needs, such as speakers.

The association did this last year in the forum at Willis. It will give henna tattoos again on Oct. 30 on the Library Mall.

“Last year we had a guy who wanted a dragon on his entire arm,” biology senior Rabbia Ansari said. “The person who did it stayed late to finish it.”

Ansari did some of the henna tattoos. She said she does better freehand.

“I’ve had experience getting it done,” Ansari said. “Doing henna comes naturally if you are good at art.”
