The University Program Council will host a series of events in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage month, annually observed Sept. 15-Oct. 15.

The month honors historic contributions made by Hispanic Americans and also commemorates the anniversary of independence for many Latin American countries.

Many students were enthused about this month’s activities. Music education sophomore Daniel McKay said Hispanic Heritage Month was important to him personally.

“This month gives us an opportunity to pay homage to our ancestors, the traditions instilled upon us, and to take great pride in our culture,” McKay said. “I’m always trying to learn and express myself through the language of my people.”

Speech pathology sophomore Susanna Perez explained that she enjoys celebrating this month in Mexico.

“We cook, we dance, and we definitely eat,” Perez said. “The festivals down there are a lot of fun too.”

Art senior Keisha Merritt also chimed in about her Puerto Rican heritage.

“We’re well-known for our parties with lots of friends and family, but we’re much more than that,” said Merritt. “I’m happy that this month sheds light on that.”

Intern Events Coordinator Jessica Lopez said UNT normally has an impressive turn out for such occasions. Tuesday’s Carnaval event was no different.

“We generally just swipe IDs for food as a way to keep track of the number of students who are in attendance,” said Lopez. “We gave away over 750 popsicles, so I’d say quite a few people came through at some point.”

The festival included Hispanic food, music, drawings and booths with cultural information about Spanish-speaking countries.

Upcoming events include “La Vida Denton” on Oct. 6 and the screening of The Longoria Affair on Oct. 13.
