Support SGA commencement speaker measure
The Editorial Board
A Student Government Association resolution was recently introduced calling for the involvement of the Distinguished Lecture Series committee in selecting commencement speakers. The measure ought to have the support of all SGA members.
UNT selected Gov. Greg Abbott as the keynote speaker at the mass commencement in May, a politician students largely oppose. An inquiry revealed there was little student input on the governor. If the resolution takes effect, students would have an immediate say in who is chosen as commencement speaker.
As SGA president-elect Adam Alattry put it, the students are graduating. There must be greater student involvement in the future, and this resolution stands the best chance of enabling the needed reconfiguration.
Liz Smith, Honors College Senator, and Adam Hasley, Advocate General, co-sponsor the resolution. Hasley is not only a senior SGA member, he is also the chair of the DLS.
We encourage SGA pass this resolution. As we’ve asserted before, students must have a say in who is their graduation speaker. A vote in favor of this resolution is a vote in favor of the student body.
