The UNT swimming and diving team fell to Texas Christian University on Wednesday night, 161-139, in a dual meet in Fort Worth.

“TCU swam great tonight,” head coach Joe Dykstra said. “The sprinter, flyers and divers performed their best tonight against us. We had some really good performances by our top members, but the rest of the squad was not up to the challenge of getting it done.”

The meet was closer than what the score shows, as the Horned Frogs and the Mean Green split eight first-place finishes in the 16 events.  TCU racked up many of its points finishing ahead of the Mean Green in second, third and fourth place in many events.

“We had four divers giving their best tonight,” head diving coach Jim Pyrch said.  “We did not get the points on the 3-meter board tonight, which we really needed.”

With one day before its next meet, Dykstra is considering moving some of the athletes around to get a better performance.

Tough test ahead

The Mean Green will host No. 2 Texas A&M University on Friday. The diving kicks off the meet at 2 p.m. in the Physical Education Building and the swimming events begin at 4 p.m. in the Pohl Recreation Center.

This will be the biggest test of the season for the Mean Green in its final dual meet of the year.

Four Olympic swimmers lead the Aggie squad – Erica Dittmer and Liliana Ibaňez from team Mexico, and Cammille Adams and gold medalist Breeja Larson from team USA.

“A&M is a good team and this is a way to motivate the team going into the Sun Belt Conference meet,“ Dykstra said. “In this meet the team gets to show what competing at the next level is.”

The Aggies come into the meet with only one loss on its record and convincing wins against Southern Methodist University and Rice University, both already having defeated the Mean Green this season.

“This is just another meet,” sophomore breaststroke swimmer Krista Rossum said. “We need to focus on putting up our best times.”

The Aggies will not dive in this event, which provides the Mean Green with a 32-point advantage when the meet moves to the swimming portion.  This is the third time this season the team has been spotted an advantage, but in the previous meetings it was unable to capitalize on it.

“We need a better effort than what we did against TCU,” Dykstra said. “We should be close in every race against the Aggies.”
