South by Southwest is known for premiering long-awaited films like Jordan Peele’s “Us” and showcasing musicians like John Mayer (back in the day). However, it also offers showcases from tech startups and community leaders you wouldn’t normally expect to see. Take a dive into the interactive events and panels to look out for at this year’s SXSW:

Alienware cosplay contest, among other gaming events

Some of the coolest things happening in the interactive session this year are the many gaming keynotes, panels and tournaments. From Behind the Scenes with NBA 2K League Players, Fortnite and Halo tournaments and something called “The Memer’s Meet Up,” gaming content will be abounding at this year’s festival. A cosplay contest presented by Alienware happening at the end of the week will yield cash prizes, so that will surely bring out amazing costumes. The contest will take place at 6 p.m. Sunday, March 17 at The Sunset Room.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the New Left

A featured session for the festival, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, congresswoman for New York’s 14th Congressional District and Twitter queen, will discuss the state of the “new left” with Briahna Gray, a columnist and senior politics editor at The Intercept. Given her involvement with the Green New Deal and her persona as a millennial congresswoman, her input on the state of the “new left” will be interesting to hear live. The event will take place at 5 p.m. Saturday, March 9 at the Austin Convention Center Ballroom D.
