The Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science alumni have offered Irving ISD student Ahmed Mohamed a $1,300 scholarship to cover his first year of TAMS, should he apply and be accepted.

The 14-year-old was arrested at MacArthur High School on Monday after bringing what school officials and police described as a “hoax bomb” to class. The “hoax bomb” was actually a clock Mohamed built himself.

After the arrest, outcries across social media platforms called Irving Independent School District out for racism and Islamophobia. The charges against Mohamed were dropped as of Wednesday.

In a press release from the TAMS Alumni Association, Mohamed was commended for his innovativeness and offered the scholarship to their program.

“Should he be admitted, we hope to welcome Ahmed and bright young math and science students of all religions and backgrounds into the TAMS community,” the TAMS press release stated. “We commend his curiosity and hope that one day he can, if he wishes, move from timed clocks on to tesla coils.”

TAMS is a statewide, magnet school for math and science students. It provides a two-year residential math and science collegiate program tuition-free. Students must pay a program charge, as well as room and board.
