Mean Green tennis competed in its last away match of the season today at the University of Houston. North Texas (10-9, 2-0) defeated the Cougars (5-18, 0-2) 5-2 after automatically earning a singles point and having a 1-0 head start on doubles due to only five available Houston players.

Freshman Minying Liang and senior Agustina Valenzuela ultimately secured the doubles point, defeating their opponents 6-1.

“Minying and Agustina did very well today,” head coach Sujay Lama said. “Their chemistry, talent and execution was great today. Houston is a challenging team even with only five players, but everyone played really crisp and sharp against them.”

The freshman due of Maria Kononova and Tamuna Kutubidze did not fully complete their set, but ended it when the set was tied 3-3.

“I wish we were able to finish,” Kutubidze said. “Compared to previous matches we played together, I thought we really seemed to improve just in time before tournament.”

Valenzuela was the first to finish her singles match, but was unable to continue her winning streak from doubles into singles. She fell to Houston junior Tina Rupert 6-0, 6-4.

Kutubidze and senior Anastasiya Shestakova were able to finish and defeat their opponents right after, bringing the score to 4-1 and protecting the win for the Mean Green. Kutubidze won 6-2, 7-5 while Shestakova won 6-3 on both sets.

“The score doesn’t show how tough the match was,” Shestakova said. “My opponent was good and it was not that easy to beat her.”

Liang continued her winning efforts from doubles into singles, beating her opponent in a close matchup of 7-6 in both sets. Kononova was the only one out of the four other singles matches to take hers to three sets where she ended up falling in the last match by two points.

“This game was my sixth win in a row,” Kutubidze said. “I want to continue it and we want to finish the season strong at home next week.”

North Texas will finish off the regular season schedule next Saturday at home against the University of Texas at Arlington at 11 a.m.
