North Texas traveled to Norman, Oklahoma for their third road match in five days Wednesday evening, this time against the University of Oklahoma.

Last year, North Texas fell short, but came close, in a 4-3 defeat against the Sooners. This time around, the match took a turn for the worst for the Mean Green as the Sooners shutout them out in a 7-0 victory.

“We did look a little flat and fatigued today but this is also part of the process of getting mentally tougher,” head coach Sujay Lama said. “We were not tough enough today.”

In the No. 1 singles match, junior Maria Kononova took on the Sooners Lily Miyazaki for the third year in a row. Kononova defeated Miyzaki last season, but in this match Miyzaki convincingly defeated Kononova in two sets 6-1, 6-3. Giving Miyzaki a 2-1 advantage in the all-time matchup between the two.

The No. 2 ranked singles match did not go much differently for North Texas, as previously undefeated junior Tamuna Kutubidze lost her first singles match of the season in two sets as well, 6-3, 6-2.

“Tamuna ran into a player who was on fire today,” Lama said.” The key for her is to have a short memory and focus on the positives on the game. She is having a phenomenal early part of the season and has to keep it going”

This brings down Kutubidze’s record to 5-1 in singles matches, and is putting together an impressive season even with the loss.

The Mean Green did not fare well in doubles matches on the day as the No. 1 doubles team of Kudubidze and Alexandra Heczey lost their match 6-1 and the No.3 doubles team lost 6-0.

North Texas has a long break following this loss to the Sooners as they do not play again until Friday Feb. 23 when they face Florida International University. Two days later, they play Marshall University on Feb. 25, in a stretch they are well prepared for after this tough road trip.

“We have over a week to get rested and prepared to play two big conference matches,” Lama said. “We will work on the areas [where] we struggled, [and] we will be motivated and ready to play the way we are capable of playing.”

Next up: North Texas returns home to face Florida International University on Feb. 23 at 2 p.m.
