The Mean Green tennis team is beginning the Conference USA tournament today in Houston. North Texas went 8-13 overall this season including a 5-4 home record and a 2-7 record on the road.

The Mean Green ended its season on a high note with a 4-2 victory over the University of South Alabama last Sunday. Senior Franziska Sprinkmeyer clinched the winning point of the match for the Mean Green on her very own senior day. The 2015 Conference USA All-Academic team member rallied from one-set down before sealing the win for North Texas.

Sprinkmeyer said she stayed focus throughout the match despite how tense and competitive South Alabama played.

“It was so close I felt like I could win the match,” Sprinkmeyer said. “I felt pretty confident with all the fans and people around me helping me out.”

Head coach Sujay Lama said he was happy with the win right before the tournament.

“In all of the eight years that I’ve coached here, I don’t think we’ve ever lost on senior day,” Lama said. “The bottom line is it comes down to this team executing on the big points.”

Lama said he feels confident in the team’s chances against rival competition at the tournament, despite the record not looking great on paper.

“It’s about peaking,” Lama said. “Historically, our teams play best at this time of the year.”

The coach also says he believes the team knows it has what it takes to compete and win the tournament if they execute at the right times.

“We’ve had an up and down year,” he said. “But in 21 matches we’ve had this year, we’ve been in every single match.”

As the tournament starts, Lama said the team can’t look too far ahead and needs to stay in the moment. He said the team is talented enough to beat anyone it plays.

“One match at a time,” he said. “We know what we’re capable of doing. We’re going to have opportunities against anyone out there.”

North Texas will kickoff the tournament with a matchup against Louisiana Tech University today at 3 p.m.
