The Mean Green tennis team won the first of its two matches in Kentucky this weekend, defeating Eastern Kentucky University, 5-2, but later falling to the University of Louisville.  UNT scheduled its match against Eastern Kentucky after Georgia State University canceled due to scheduling issues.

Eastern Kentucky

UNT started the day with the doubles point after winning two of the three doubles matches. After the doubles matches, the Mean Green took the lead, winning two of the singles matches, but let Eastern Kentucky catch up, when it dropped two matches at the No. 4 and 1 positions to bring the score to 3-2.

“We were lucky as far as doubles go,” head coach Sujay Lama said. “We played our worst doubles of the year, but we still found a way to win the point.”

The match between UNT senior Ilona Serchenko and EKU Marcela Jimenez would either clinch the win for UNT or give Eastern Kentucky a chance to fight for the victory. In a three-set thriller, Serchenko came out on top, giving the win to UNT.

“It was really exciting because we didn’t play for a week,” Serchenko said. “So we were ready to go. Even without playing for a week, we practiced and practiced. So it was a good come back for us.”

The Cardinals snapped UNT’s four-game winning streak with a 5-2 win.

“Louisville is a very good indoor team and we played indoors because of rain,” Lama said. “I knew we were going to have to fight defensively, but we didn’t fight as hard as we should have.”

Louisville started the day taking the doubles point, and followed that point with three wins in the singles matches. The No. 1, 2 and 3 position gave the Cardinals the four points needed to win. The match between UNT senior Valentina Starkova and Manuela Velasquez was the final loss for UNT that clinched the win for Louisville.

“It really was not the greatest feeling, but we did our best,” Starkova said. “I think if I would have won it could have gone either way.”

University of Texas-Arlington

UNT’s match with cross-town rival UTA was canceled due to weather on Tuesday. The Mean Green will take on Tyler Junior College tomorrow at 3 p.m. at the Waranch Tennis Complex.

“It is very disappointing and an opportunity lost for us to stay sharp,” Lama said. “It really takes away from creating momentum, but we are going up against the number one junior college team in the country so we have to stay sharp and work hard.”
