North Texas tennis lost to the University of South Florida 4-3 on Saturday in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Mean Green (5-6) put up a fight all the way through the singles matches, but couldn’t prevail against the Bulls (2-4).
The women came out strong in the afternoon and won the doubles point early on, but could not keep up the momentum throughout the day through the singles matches.
Freshmen Tamuna Kutubidze and Maria Kononova, the reigning Conference USA Player of the Week, swept South Florida juniors Vera Bessonova and Olga Martinez 6-0. In the meantime, North Texas freshman Minying Liang and senior Anastasiya Shestakova came away with a 7-5 win to secure the doubles point early on.
North Texas got behind early in the singles match after Kononova and Kutubidze fell to their North Florida opponents, which put them behind 2-1 overall. The only two Mean Green players to win their singles matches and give the Mean Green a 3-2 advantage were Shestakova and senior Agustina Valenzuela, who defeated freshman Ana Roman Dominguez and Bessonova, respectively.
But after that, junior Alexis Thoma and senior Kamilla Galieva both lost in their rallies to freshmen Vanja Klaric and Nicole Dzenga, respectively, giving North Florida the 4-3 win.
Next up for Mean Green tennis is an away match in Fort Worth, Texas versus Texas Christian University before they come back to Denton for five straight home matches. The match is on Wednesday, March 2 at 5:30 p.m.
