As the nation recovers from four years under the reign of the worst president in history, there’s an opportunity for the Democratic Party to heal the country. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have a lot of work to do. Fortunately, they’ll have some help from the House and the Senate as the Democratic Party takes the majority. For now, the Republican Party is dead after Trump ripped away any trust Americans had left in them.

Previously, the Democratic Party has taken a centrist approach, but that won’t be enough to meet the moment and provide significant relief. It’s time for Democrats to step up and listen to their progressive colleagues, who have been treated unfairly on both sides of the political spectrum.

Four years ago, Sen. Bernie Sanders was at war with the Democratic Establishment after a nasty battle with Hilary Clinton for the 2016 Democratic presidential primary race. Sanders lost another chance to become president when the Democratic party backed Biden instead of Sanders. Even after losing the Democratic presidential primary twice, Sanders is dedicated to helping Americans during one of the most difficult times modern America has experienced.

Recently, Sanders penned an op-ed for CNN where he outlined an impressive agenda for the Democrats to accomplish while they’re in control. The ideas in his outline include a generous stimulus bill, Medicare-for-all, cancellation of student loan debt, a minimum wage increase and much more. If we have any hope of building a better country, the Democratic Establishment needs to wake up and listen to progressives like Sanders. They’re the most popular members of Congress for a reason.

Sanders has gained an impressive following, along with his younger, female colleagues in the House. With the help of social media and progressive young adults, five congresswomen, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, Cori Bush of Missouri and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan have formed ‘The Squad.’ Collectively, The Squad has over 16 million followers on Twitter. The American people are taking a sharp turn towards the left and it’s time for centrist politics to be phased out.

During the first 100 days of Biden’s presidency, he’s announced plans to address the coronavirus pandemic, racial inequality, immigration reform, climate change, provide $1.9 trillion in stimulus relief and repair foreign relations.

These are positive steps in the left direction, but I hope to see the Biden administration embrace legislation like The Green New Deal. The deal was introduced by Ocasio-Cortez in 2019 and it could help prevent the devastating impact of climate change on the U.S. as well as boost the economy by creating jobs. This piece of legislation is only one example of the possible progress Democrats can make during the Biden administration.

The best way to urge the Democratic Party towards the left is for the public to guide the way. It’s clear that Americans want a government willing to take tangible steps towards creating a better country for everyone. A record-breaking 81,283,485 Americans voted blue, giving Biden and Harris the chance to make America respectable again. If they have any hopes of keeping the Democratic Party popular with Americans, now is the time to take advantage of the opportunity they’ve been given.
