The Dose: ‘Melodrama’ is the Lorde we’ve been waiting for

Singer-songwriter Lorde gained a new fan this past weekend.

Her second album “Melodrama” was released on Friday, and I haven’t stopped listening to it since. It’s emotional, real and showcases her musical talent and versatility.

Four years ago, Lorde stepped into the spotlight and intrigued us all with her dark, sultry voice and matching persona. Her breakout single “Royals” skyrocketed her to quick international fame at only 16 years old. In late 2013, her debut album “Pure Heroine” was released.

When “Royals” came out, I was interested. Unfortunately, it quickly became overplayed and tired. Her later singles “Tennis Court” and “Team” had the same effect on me. All three songs sound way too similar to one another, and I wasn’t impressed by any.

“Pure Heroine” marked the moment in which Lorde’s style was well established. The album as a whole was decent, with her voice being the central focus of each song and each electronic loop being well built into each track. I like that her lyrics criticize popular culture. But once again, all of the tracks sounded close to being the same, reusing the same techniques to create slightly different versions of the same song.

In contrast, “Melodrama” shows her growth as an artist. Each song is unique. When the first single off the new album came out, “Green Light,” it was so drastically different from her previous work that I knew I needed to give Lorde another chance.

“Melodrama” is the album I wanted to hear from Lorde from the start.

It shows her building upon her style in a refreshing way. The song “Liability” is a piano ballad, something new for her. The song shows her versatility, and I really enjoyed it.

The album addresses her growth as a person as well. The lyrical content of “Melodrama” reveals love, loss and real emotional depth, which many pop artists lack in their music. This album is more mature than her first in that aspect.

This is further evidenced in the song “Hard Feelings/Loveless” through the lyrics, “These are what they call hard feelings of love / when the sweet words and fevers leave us right here in the cold.” The song “Writer in the Dark” focuses on feelings of moving on from a breakup, the most notable lyrics being “but in our darkest hours I stumbled on a secret power / I’ll find a way to be without you, babe.” Both those songs have a dark and serious vibe.

My personal favorite is the song “Perfect Places.” To me, it speaks on that feeling of not belonging anywhere, and growing up. The lyrics, “Send us to perfect places / all of our heroes are fading / now I can’t stand to be alone,” particularly stand out.

Lorde is a true artist. Her lyrics are real and her music is creative. As a new fan of hers, I hope she doesn’t make us wait four more years for the next album. Until then, I’ll keep “Melodrama” on repeat.
