  • The turnaround by the UNT defense was one that must have even made “Mean” Joe Greene proud. Although Ball State University hadn’t played top caliber teams, they were still the No. 21 scoring offense with the No. 10 quarterback in the nation coming into the game. The Mean Green allowed 27 points in 27 minutes, followed by zero points in 33 minutes.
  • The longest offensive pass play was 25 yards and there was nothing wrong with that. Senior quarterback Derek Thompson took the short and medium routes the Ball State defense gave him the entire night and it worked.
  • Speaking of Thompson, UNT was lucky he wasn’t seriously injured when he took a tumble over a bench after being pushed out of bounds on his own sideline. He left the game with a thumb cramp but returned soon afterwards. In the post-game press conference, head coach Dan McCarney said the loudest he yelled all night was at the players who let Thompson fly by instead of helping slow his momentum.
  • There was a moment of comedy in the press box towards the end of the first half. One of the Fox Sports television cameras was mounted to a truck on the sidelines, but in preparation for the halftime performance, the marching band had surrounded the truck with xylophones. Instead of asking them to move, the Fox Sports camera crew called up to the press box with the “emergency”. Fortunately, an ensuing phone call down to the field helped clear some room. Whew. Crisis averted.
  • Senior wide receiver Brelan Chancellor is worth the price of admission for his electric punt returns alone. He didn’t have much space on any of his returns, but somehow danced, twisted and pirouetted through the defense like a leaf falling from a tree in autumn for a decent gain each time.
