The floodgates opened late for the University of North Texas, as the team scored three late goals over a span of four minutes to defeat the University of Alabama at Birmingham 3-0 on Sunday afternoon. Junior Rachel Holden, senior Jackie Moureau and freshman Taylor Torres all got on the score sheet to get North Texas its’ sixth straight win.

“It was a little bit frustrating obviously in the first half,” head coach John Hedlund said. “I was proud of the team in the second half. They showed a little more patience and connected on a few more passes. I thought if we could get that first goal it would lead to a couple more.”

An exciting first half of soccer would see no score but plenty of action. Both sides hit the crossbar, and both keepers had to make multiple saves to keep their squads in the match.
North Texas would then turn up the pressure getting two quick chances within a two minute span. The first was in the 24th minute after a UAB defender slipped with the ball at her feet. Libby Murphy picked it up for the Mean Green and fired a shot, but a quick reflex save by Kelsey Daughtrey prevented a goal.

The Mean Green then had another chance in the 26th minute when a floated ball found Taylor Torres, who beat her defender. The freshman striker let a shot fly, but it banged off the crossbar and out of play.

Just five minutes later the Mean Green would test Daughtrey again after Kelci Slaughter flicked a header towards goal. But Daughtrey was there as she sprawled to her right and got her fingertips to the shot.

UAB, not to be outdone by the Mean Green, would hit the bar late in the first half as Paige Hanks tried to catch Kerestine sleeping with a shot from well outside the box. She almost got her, but Hanks’ shot thudded off the crossbar. North Texas dominated possession late on.

The second half was another even affair until North Texas scored their first goal, there were not many chances on goal until then.

It was all North Texas after Holden scored her ninth of the season and the first of the game in the 81st minute. A Torres shot would be saved right into the path of Holden who followed the play and finished into the empty net giving North Texas a 1-0 lead.

“Once we get one goal we always want to get another one,” Holden said. “I always want to score and it feels good to score. They nailed following the play into our heads before and at halftime. Any keeper can make mistakes, so it’s always good to follow up. And that’s what happened.”

Three minutes later, North Texas would score again, this time from a corner kick. Senior Karla Pineda sent the ball towards senior Lindsey Hulstein, and the ball was knocked into the center for Moureau. She calmly finished making it 2-0 for North Texas, her first goal of the season.

“I thought it was going way out,” Moureau said. “Somehow Lindsey got the ball, and it was an awesome cross back across goal.”

UAB would have a chance to answer after forcing Kerestine to make a save. The ball fell to Hanks, who had an open net, but she shanked her shot wide. North Texas would go right down the field and put the nail in the coffin by the way of a Torres goal.

Torres’ shot from just inside the box went to the top right corner for 3-0 in the 85th minute, finishing off the match and a crazy final couple of minutes. North Texas would see the match out from there.

The Mean Green return to action Friday at the University of Southern Mississippi. They then return home for the final home game against Rice University, which is also senior night.
