America hasn’t seen many car chase movies since the “Fast and Furious” franchise monopolized the genre. Keeping that in mind, it’s worth giving last summer’s “Hit and Run” a fighting chance despite the cheesy title.

Actor, writer and director Dax Shepard, known for his previous work on NBC’s “Parenthood,” stars as Charlie Bronson: a member of the Witness Protection Program who teams up with on-screen girlfriend and real life fiancé Kristen Bell in a cross country journey to get her to a job interview. Of course, things do not go according to plan – which is pretty textbook stuff for any road trip movie.

Bell’s ex-boyfriend Gil, played by Michael Rosenbaum of “Smallville,” is the primary cause for Bell and Shepard’s turmoil. “Hit and Run” introduces an assortment of hilarious characters including a surprisingly funny performance from Tom Arnold of “True Lies” fame and a sudden, offbeat cameo by “The Hangover” star Bradley Cooper, who sports a creepily realistic dreadlock wig. Filmed on a shoestring budget of $2 million, “Hit and Run” achieves the same level of high-octane excitement as a major Hollywood blockbuster.

Shepard hasn’t appeared as a leading man very often in his career, but his abilities shine through in this project, particularly considering he also wrote and co-directed the film. With the help of a strong script, the plot keeps pace and tosses out plenty of well-timed, hilarious one-liners. “Hit and Run” not only succeeds as an action comedy but as a romantic comedy. Shepard and Bell’s real relationship gives their characters a genuine on-screen chemistry, making this flick a great choice for date night.

“Hit and Run” has something for almost everyone. It’s not perfect by any means, but it accomplishes nearly everything the filmmakers set out of achieve: A group of Hollywood A-list friends getting together to have a great time while making a seriously fun movie. If that’s all you’re looking for, take it for a rental ride.
