The summer is coming to a close and along with the changing of the leaves, movie studios are putting a halt on blockbusters and gearing up for awards season. There are a plethora of potentially great films in store for moviegoers this fall, so it is difficult to narrow it down, but this list may help to point you in the right direction.

10. “Gravity”

Release Date: October 4th

Director: Alfonso Cuarón

Starring: George Clooney, Sandra Bullock

Why should you be excited? Cuarón has not gotten behind the camera since his mind-bending film “Children of Men,” and although the trailer seems to give a lot of plot away, it is doubtful that Cuarón would show all his cards just yet.

9. “12 Years A Slave”

Release Date: October 18th

Director: Steve McQueen

Starring: Chiwetel Ejofor, Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt

Why should you be excited?  The trailer for “12 Years A Slave” is gripping and tearful. This film has one of the most star-studded casts of the year, including notorious scene-stealers Benedict Cumberbatch (“Star Trek Into Darkness”) and Michael Fassbender (“X-Men: First Class”). Director: David O. Russell

Starring: Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence

Why should you be excited? Writer/Director David O. Russell (“The Silver Linings Playbook”) showcases his versatile talents yet again. “American Hustle” looks sexy, funny and stylistic. “American Hustle” is bound to raise some eyebrows come Oscar season.

6. “The Monuments Men”

Release Date: December 18th

Director: George Clooney

Release Date: September 27th

Director: Joseph Gordon Levitt

Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore

Why should you be excited?  The directorial debut from multi-hyphenate star Joseph Gordon-Levitt made its debut at film festivals across the country the first part of the year to rave reviews. Director: Martin Scorsese
