Top five final frontier films

Cole Clay / Intern
This Friday “Gravity” will be released nationwide, and so far it has been getting rave reviews from fans and critics alike. So here at North Texas Daily we were thinking about our five favorite films that take place in space. Of course films such as “Star Wars” and “Avatar” come to mind, but we wanted to think outside the box a little bit and share with YOU some good pairings to go with this weekend’s biggest release.
5. “Event Horizon”
Starring: Laurence Fishburne, Sam Neill
Why You Should Watch: Lead actors Neill and Fishburne are on a mission to rescue a starship that disappeared seven years prior. The film starts as a typical space film, but descends into a web of terror that is too much fun to resist. This film went largely unnoticed back in 1997 and was panned critically, but based on it’s themes and frightening climax it has since obtained a cult following.
4. “Sunshine”
Starring: Cillian Murphy, Rose Byrne, Chris Evans
Why You Should Watch: Director Danny Boyle (“127 Hours”) is truly a versatile filmmaker and he really flexes his creative muscles with this film. “Sunshine” is about a spaceship sent to re-ignite a dying sun, but what they couldn’t imagine is the terror they find when they get to their destination. This film is pure madness and it develops a slow burn, building the tension throughout and accompanies that with dazzling visuals, which makes for a classic sci-fi film.
3. “Moon”
Starring: Sam Rockwell, Kevin Spacey
Why You Should Watch: “Moon” is a one-man show that chronicles an astronaut’s battle with loneliness while he is at the end of a three-year mining trip on the moon. The only other person he encounters is not a person at all, but a haunting computer named GERTY voiced by Spacey. This film is excellent and any more plot detail would venture into spoiler territory.
2. “Alien”
Starring: Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, John Hurt
Why You Should Watch: This 1979 classic laid a framework for Sci-Fi films today by creating one of the scariest creatures ever to grace the silver screen. The film is rather quiet throughout which makes the film that much more terrifying and gets you to realize how far out of touch these space explorers are from safety.
1. “Wall-E”
Starring: Ben Burtt, Jeff Garlin
Why You Should Watch: This is arguably Pixar’s best film to date. “Wall-E” tells the story of the loneliest robot on Earth, actually he is the only one left; this cute little droid is stuck in the dystopian ruins of our planet sorting through his assigned task; trash. The film is adored by audiences of all ages and offers a rare social commentary.
