The Mean Green men’s and women’s track and field teams had a strong meet in Arlington Saturday with 34 top-10 finishes at the University of Texas-Arlington Invitational. North Texas had three third place finishes, two second place finishes and one first place finish.

Senior Chastity Stewart grabbed the squad’s lone first place title in the 400-meter hurdle event with a time of 1:00.21. Stewart also placed third in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing first amongst collegiate runners with a time of 13.47.

“I felt really good about my performance,” Stewart said. “I needed to do well to get momentum for the Texas Relays.”

Stewart is back in action over a year after redshirting and taking a year off to recover from minor injuries. The graduate student said returning as a key leader for the Mean Green in her last season means a lot to her.

“It’s so humbling to be performing as one of the team’s seniors,” Stewart said. “I expect a lot of myself, and I try to be the best leader on and off the track for the younger runners.”

For the men, junior Colin Heard placed fifth overall with a time of 21.05 in the 200-meter event. Senior Connor Bey rounded out the top 10 with a 10th place finish, coming in at 21.34. Freshman Justin Joe finished right behind Bey at 21.42 in 11th place.

Bey’s top 10 200-meter finish also notched the senior a personal best time in the event.

“It was so fun and exciting,” Bey said. “The whole team did well, and it’s always great to get a personal best time.”

The prestigious Texas Relays start Wednesday in Austin – showcasing the best high school and collegiate track and field talent across the Lone Star State. Head coach Carl Sheffield said the past two meets the team has competed in have prepared them to compete against some of the fastest runners from all over the state.

“I feel really good about how our spring outdoor season has started off with good meets at the TCU and UTA invites,” Sheffield said. “March is a chance for us to reload from indoor and to start preparing for the April meets and conference in May.”

The men’s and women’s teams will compete in the 4×100 relay, the 4×800 relay, the sprint medley, distance medley and the men’s 4×400 relay led by Bey. North Texas will compete in the individual events with Stewart in the 100 and 400 hurdles, senior Eddie Wilcox in the men’s high jump, junior Jazmine Martin the women’s triple jump and seniors Bryce McAndrew and Troy Taylor in the mile event.

Sheffield said he thinks the women’s distance medley of sophomore Christina Moralez, senior Rhenique Williams, sophomore Susannah Lynch and senior Susie Kemper could break the North Texas distance medley record at the Texas Relays.

“All of their personal best times are better than the school record, so there’s a good chance they could set a new one,” Sheffield said. “The Texas Relays will show us how well we can compete against some of the best athletes in the country.”
