As the Mean Green track and field players prepare for the Conference USA Outdoor Championships on May 15 to 18, they have the experiences and atmosphere of the Indoor Championship earlier this year to refer to.

With the exception of the track being bigger, there are not that many differences from the indoor to outdoor conference tournament. However, the championship meets are different than regular meets because they are actually being judged for points. The regular season meets do not have a point system.

“It is a true epitome of a team sport,” head coach Carl Sheffield said. “I told my guys that they only score points four times out of the year — that’s the indoor and outdoor conference champions and indoor and outdoor national champions. So when people finally come together to score points, they rally behind each other. You know that it’s not just a day at a track meet.”

Sheffield said the events are the same for the most part and the same group of people will likely be going. Sheffield also said the team learned a lot about themselves and the rest of C-USA at the indoor conference championships on Feb. 28 and March 1.

“It still kind of rocked us to find out how much more competitive it was than the Sun Belt,” Sheffield said. “We have a really competitive team, but the intensity of every event was higher than we imagined. The depth of teams that were in the top three or four far outweighed us.”

Sheffield said that East Carolina University, the University of Texas at El Paso, Louisiana Tech University and Rice University are some of the toughest teams in the conference. Sophomore distance runner Shauna Pali said that she’s excited about the high level of competition and said it could help the team in areas she believes they can all improve.

“With indoor it was pretty cool. It was a lot more team based. It was a pretty cool experience,” Pali said. “And obviously coaches are a lot more into it because one place might change the whole ranking of your whole team at the end of the day, so everything sort of counts.”

At the indoor championships, the Mean Green men finished in eighth place while the women finished ninth. Jumper Mona Landry said that it is hard to judge how the team stacks up with everyone else in the conference this time around, but said they could be successful at the outdoor championships.

“Everyone in our conference is going to give us a run for our money,” Landry said. “We can’t really say where we stack up because you never know. When we line up that day, whoever that came in at first place might be having an off day and we might go out there and dominate them, so you can’t really say.”

Sheffield said he is building a team that likes the intensity of a big meet such as the outdoor championships.

“I like to know that the guy that I’m racing standing next to me – if I beat him I advance,” Sheffield said. “It’s not how fast you run. It’s ‘No, if I beat you I get into the final,’ so I like head-to-head competition.”
