The Mean Green is in Norman, Okla. this weekend participating in the Oklahoma Invitational – the final indoor meet of the season before the Sun Belt Conference championships on Feb. 23-24.

This weekend will be different for UNT, as the entire team will not be participating in the meet. As the Mean Green get closer to the conference championships, some athletes have elected to rest and recover this weekend, as others look to claim their ticket to the SBC or to get more practice in beforehand.

“Like always, I strive for the best,” junior high jumper Shahaf Bareni said. “I changed something in my approach and I want to test it before conference, and to get a good mark to get higher on the list in the NCAA.”

Coming off what she describes as a rough two meets, Bareni said the last week before championships is part of her preparation. She tweaked a few things in her approach, and said this weekend is the perfect chance to get in more practice.

“It’s a really easy meet for me,” she said. “It’s like practice. If I don’t have a good day at least I got my practice in.”

Some athletes are still looking to punch their indoor championships ticket. Junior distance runner Kendria Burton and freshman distance runner James Coleman look to earn a higher seed in the championships.

“I think if I drop my time maybe four-tenths in the 100-hurdles then I think I’ll have a spot,” Burton said.

The team traveled to Norman for the J.D. Martin Invitational on Jan. 19 and Burton said the team’s success hinged on the close track the facility has to offer and that having been there before works in the Mean Green’s favor.

Coleman hasn’t had much time to compete this season, being his second indoor meet, but his training has given him hope for a chance to compete in the indoor championships.

“I feel pretty confident about it,” Coleman said. “Hopefully I can go out, run a good time and it gives me a chance to compete at conference and score the team some points.”

The team will compete all day Saturday at the Mosier Indoor Facility on the University of Oklahoma campus.
